I watched the 1978 animated film version of Watership Down over the festive period last December. I had last watched the film as a child, and at the time saw the storyline in terms of good versus evil, along with friendship, alliances, and the universal fight for survival. I had never read the book, but felt curious to appreciate the full source material, so I have since ordered and read through a paperback copy from my local book shop in Bangkok. A website design company I use recently surveyed its Instagram followers, asking for the name of a story they'd read as children that's just as good today. Immediately I said Watership Down.
Adams made up the story for his little girls and didn't originally have any plans to write it down, but fortunately he took daughters' advice to do so. I'm not sure whether he intended it as a parable or metaphor the way Tolkien did with his stories, but it can absolutely be read that way. It's got all the classic elements of a great story, including universal truths about the nature of freedom, brotherhood, courage, friendship, and love--and truths about their antipodes.
(Did you know that all the locations mentioned in the novel are real places in southern England? You can find them on Google maps and even see the down itself from the street view. Nuthanger Farm, the iron road, the high tension power lines between Nuthanger and the down, Woundwort's warren, Sandleford warren, the River Test: all of it. The Test doesn't look very tended as a trout stream any more, but then Adams was writing in the early 70's, IIRC. My edition of the novel includes a map drawn by Adams, but on the page it's not oriented with north at the top, so you have to adjust for that to make things match up.)
