This analogy seems interesting, but leaves out those of us who never cared for sports! Where do we fit in the narrative?
Earlier this year I read Matthias Desmet's book on mass formation psychosis, and was somewhat disappointed in his dismissal of the idea that certain people control the masses through propaganda and other means. (Check out Edward Bernays and his 1928 book on Propaganda.) Recently I acquired the 1956 book, The Rape of the Mind, by Joost Meerloo, but have only read the introduction thus far.
Thanks for your insights and reading recommendations. I've just acquired the Bernays book and will be getting into it soon. As for the sports psychology cited, I was hypothesising that regardless of interest in sport affiliation, the concept of either basking in the success of the group or dissociating oneself from the group in the event of failure - could be applied to our current predicament, and indeed other "current things" per the narrative bombardments.

Why on earth would you place the word "cock" in an otherwise intelligent and dignified article? Shame on you.
That term 'cock-up' may sound rude, but it isn't. It means to blunder or make a mistake. Here's the Cambridge definition:

I appreciate the criticism and perhaps should choose more universally recognised slang. We Brits are an odd bunch.
